Tractus Takes Key Role in the Shanghai World FDI Forum
Tractus Asia was a Conference Partner at the 14th Annual World Forum for Foreign Direct Investment in Shanghai.
Shanghai, China 23 May 2017 – Tractus Asia worked closely with the event organizer and global partner Conway Inc. to ensure the success of the recent 2017 World Forum for FDI held in Shanghai, China. The sold-out conference attracted delegates from 41 countries, representing governments, economic development organizations, private corporations, and investors. Tractus supported the conference, both behind the scenes and onstage, by recruiting attendees, engaging sponsors, facilitating investment delegations, conducting an FDI training seminar, and organizing and moderating one of the key sessions for the event.
“We were delighted to continue Tractus support of our strategic partner Conway by participating in this year’s World FDI Forum. We had an extra incentive to help make the event successful as it was located in Shanghai where we have our largest corporate presence. Congratulations to Conway on what was by far the largest attended and most successful World Forum to-date.” John Evans, Managing Director of Tractus Asia.
Tractus’ efforts helped ensure that this year’s conference attendance well outpaced all previous years. Drawing upon an extensive network of economic development and corporate contacts across eight offices, Tractus Asia added diversity as well as volume to the attendees list, including two senior executives from Myanmar. This marked the first time the World Forum welcomed participants from the formerly sanctioned nation.
A highlight of the Forum was a panel discussion on China’s Outbound FDI moderated and organized by Tractus’ Managing Director John Evans. The discussion focused on the opportunities, challenges, and motivations of Chinese FDI from the perspective of the investors themselves – a discussion of particular interest to the attendees given the location and China’s increasing dominance in global outbound FDI. Panel speakers included Dr. James Shen, Vice Head of Pengxin International Mining Co., Ltd.; Yongtai Hou, Chairman and Executive Director of Shanghai Haohai; Mandi Sun, Founder & President of CloudCC.com Co., Ltd.; and Patrick Becker, CEO & Founder of Bexuco Ltd.
“The discussion panel on China Outbound FDI moderated by John Evans was the most impactful of the 2017 World Forum, giving delegates unprecedented insight into the corporate decision-making processes and strategies for some of China’s fastest growing companies.” Adam Jones-Kelley, President of Conway, Inc.
The Forum was an excellent opportunity for economic development organizations to introduce prospective investors to the benefits of their regions. For example, Tractus recruited Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) to be an exhibiting sponsor of the conference, providing them with prominent exposure to all attendees and expanding location brand awareness. Two other EDOs, HQ Vancouver and TexasOne, utilized Tractus FDI attraction services to facilitate a full schedule of meetings with interested Chinese investors and media to augment the Forum schedule, giving their delegations maximal return on their visit to Shanghai.
For the second year in a row, John Evans also led a session in the pre-Forum FDI training program, but this year he took a controversial stance. His topic, “FDI Worst Practices: Common Mistakes EDOs Make” was a wake-up call to many of the seminar attendees whose organizations may have been guilty of some of these initiatives. The training session had an optimistic ending with ways to identify and correct these common habits, turning them into strategies for successful FDI attraction.
“Many Global EDOs often have unrealistic expectations for FDI attraction in Asia and the time and resources it takes to succeed. I was delighted to be able to highlight a top-10 list of the mistakes that EDOs make when looking for Asian investors. I was particularly pleased with the EDOs proactive participation in the training seminar and thought the combination of global FDI experts and the EDO engagement helped the audience to understand how to eliminate some of the common mistakes they may be making and help focus their strategy on the ‘best practices’ which will result in success” John Evans, Managing Director of Tractus Asia.
Riding the momentum from this year’s success, Conway and Tractus have already begun to look forward to the World Forum for FDI 2018, to be held in Liverpool, UK. Once again, the conference is expected to gather an audience from all parts of the world representing both public and private organizations interested in the evolving landscape of cross-border investment. Brexit, Trump, and other challenges – both political and economic- will supply engaging topics for panelists and networking nights.
