Tractus Asia Hosts German Livestock Mission to India 2017
Representatives of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture as well as Enviacon International GmbH travelled to key agriculture regions in India.
INDIA – Tractus Asia, an international business advisory and consulting leader in Asia, successfully hosted and facilitated a German trade mission on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Mission delegates included German companies in livestock sciences and breeding, agriculture plant and engineering, support infrastructure, and skills training services. Mr. Michael Kessler, the Counsellor of Food and Agriculture of the German Embassy in New Delhi, also joined the mission. The purpose of the visit was to study the market and explore commercial opportunities. The mission was facilitated by the German market consultancy firm Enviacon International GmbH and supported by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
The delegation travelled through the agriculture-rich states of Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat, visited large livestock breeding farms, and met with farming associations and local farmers to understand the challenges specific to those regions. The farmers shared their need for affordable solutions to increase livestock productivity as well as guidance and technical training to implement these solutions. The delegates found the visit useful for developing marketing and positioning strategies by not only hearing but also experiencing the Indian farmers’ point-of-view.
In addition to farm tours, Tractus Asia also prepared a slate of events and business meetings with senior government and industry leaders. The delegation participated in the International Dairy and Agri Expo 2017 in Ldhiana, networking events in Chandigarh and New Delhi, and participated in the seminar German-Indian Partnership in Livestock and Agriculture that was also attended by the Indian Ministry of Agriculture.
The business meetings included both public and private sector Indian companies and provided the German delegates a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by the Indian livestock and agriculture industry. The Indian Government and business leaders welcomed initiatives from and the participation of German companies in India’s growing agri-business sector.
India and Germany’s relationship has traditionally been strong due to commercial, cultural and technological co-operation. In addition to education exchange, research & development, and security, Germany is also India’s largest trading partner in Europe, wherein bilateral trade between the two countries in 2016 was valued at US$17.42 billion. With over 1600 Indo-German collaborations and 600 Indo-German joint ventures in operation, Germany is India’s 7th largest foreign direct investment source country.
Agriculture and livestock farming are among the major pillars of the Indian economy. In recent years, Indian farmers have begun to take advantage of German agricultural best practices, advanced solutions and technology. For example, in livestock management German Holstein bulls are cross-bred with indigenous Indian breeds to increase milk production and genetic resilience while in agriculture innovative solutions in crop sciences and machinery are among the key focus areas of future partnerships between Germany and India.
